In the magazine "Foreign literature" For several years now, a series of essay writer Peter Wail under the general name is printed "Genius places". In them, the author traces the connection of the great creators of the past with cities in which their lives flowed. Below we print a fragment of a non-published essay dedicated to Copenhagen Andersen and containing nontrivial, unexpected, and for someone, perhaps, and shocking look at the identity of the famous storyter. Fully text will be printed in the December issue "Foreign Literature".

Melancholic fairy tales and stories, constant complaints in correspondence and memoirs "Tale of my life", Biographies written under their influence – everything builds an image of a sufferer who breaks through in their native country through misunderstanding, non-recognition, insults and mockery. But it is difficult to imagine a happier writer fate. From youth, surrounded by fans and patters, published the first book in seventeen years, who became the world superstar long before the forty, who lived from thirty only on literary earnings and scholarships, friendly with great writers, caught and awarded by monarchs, spent old age in glory and honred.

Of course, it was laughing at him: for example, a lady of easy behavior from tivoli over his fun appearance – a long nose, incredible thinness, huge feet, disproportionate hands. Andersen was hardly the only Copenhagen who did not like the open in 1843 and is now known to the whole world of amusement park, Disneyland XIX century. To this day, Danish provincials often come not so much in Copenhagen, as in Tivoli: the park opposite the station, across the street.

In general, the spirit of fun reigns in Copenhagen, who makes the city crowd of one of the most bright in the European North, with frequent impressions of wonderful Danish beauties. The crowd is best observed on strict – the longest pedestrian street continent. Here are blown, dance, sing and clusters are sitting around the fountains. From the noisy Town Hall Square, it stretches to the open space in front of the Palace of Christianborg, concluded by the spacious new Royal Square, which overlooks the Port District of Puhaven. This path can be traced on Andersen’s fairy tale "Kalosh Happiness". All names are the same. But in Copenhagen there is no coziness, an animating material of fairy tales. And there are doubts – was the city of the era of Andersen? Andersen knew the city thoroughly and, judging by his closer attention, loved, as well as the country: his poem "Denmark, my homeland" still taught by heart in schools. But – as often happens – tolerated to Copenhagen guilt for his troubles.

When you read it all over the volume – it can be seen how these uneasy relations with the fatherland were refracted. Fruitful – in fairy tales. Frog dialogue: "What rains, what a humidity is charming! Right seems to be sitting in raw ditch. Who is not happy with such weather, he does not like the Motherland". As in a modern our joke: "This is our homeland, son".

And completely different style and pathos letters. After a triumphant trip in Europe: "I arrived in Copenhagen. A few hours later I stood, looking out the window when we went past two well-dressed gentlemen. They saw me, stopped, laughed, and one of them pointed to me and said so loudly that I heard every word: "Look! Here is our Orangutan, which is so famous abroad!"

Much will become clear if you consider the fertility of Andersen. The novels, collections of poems, travel notes, were played in the theater: all this was rushed into the history of literature. But contemporaries-compatriots consumed the products in full and from time to time were advertising. The export, joint efforts of the author and translators, was the selection material – from here and the difference in the home and foreign perception of Andersen.

It is clear that he did not realize this. Did not want to realize. Holy believing from youth to his destination, Andersen was adamant in a quest for recognition – a nasty duckling with the character of a persistent tin soldier. At thirty four years he wrote: "My name begins to shine, and this is the only thing for what I live. I’m thirsty than honors and glory, how poor women craves gold.."

Much more gold worried about glitter. First of all – the royal. Andersen was a favorite monarchs. The list of his crowded acquaintances – as a list of Don Juan, who this virgin replenished with Donjuan arrogance. Heine responded about his improving the titles contemptuously by using words "servile" and "servile". The best friend of Henrietta Wulf did not lose, so as not to poop him: "Do you really put title, money, aristocratic blood, the success is that just a shell, – above the genius, spirit, dawn of the soul?" But in his gift, Andersen did not doubt, and the proximity to the kings inspired the necessary confidence, weakened the oppression of complexes, compensated for everything that he suffered from. Andersen thoughtfully posed before the camera: more than one and a half hundred of his portraits. He considered his right profile advantage of the left, long ago studied pictures – as if every time hoping that something else would be seen.

He died a virgin, tormented by fear of not perfect sin. I fell in love, I wanted to marry, but humble female scared: his love letters so madly dusting, which is already just insane. It is easy to assume that it was also their true deep goal: scare and push off. In any case, from these women he heard the answer invested in the mouth of the History Heroine "Under Ivoy": "I will always be faithful to you, love sister, but. not more!"

As for women inadvertent, the Andersen was afraid of them as afraid, the lust, any teenager: the feeling known to every man, with the only difference that the adolescence of Andersen lasted to old age. 29-year-old in Naples He recorded impressions from meetings with street prostitutes in the diary: "I’m still innocent, but my blood is burning". The abundance of deaths is stunned – at the level of film engines. In Andersen fairy tales, children often suffer and die, but most of all go to girls: "The executioner cut off her legs with the red shoes – the dancing legs rushed over the field and disappeared into the scaffolding of the forest". In this ominous animation sounds the motive of the famous "Mermaid" – female abuse.

This statue is a flow of tourists – from the new Royal Square past the monumental marble church, past the cozy Orthodox church, past the elegant Palace Amalienborg with one of the most elegant areas in Europe: past all this man-made beauty – to the man-made embodiment of horror before beauty.
